AI Card Scanning Explained: How CardDeckr Identifies Your Cards
One of the most requested features from our early testers is fast, accurate card scanning. Point your phone at a card, and CardDeckr identifies it, pulls the current market price, and adds it to your portfolio. Here’s how it works under the hood.
The Scanning Pipeline
When you snap a photo of a card, several things happen in rapid succession:
- Image preprocessing — We crop, rotate, and normalize the image to isolate the card from the background.
- Feature extraction — Our model identifies key visual features: artwork, set symbol, card name, and collector number.
- Database matching — We compare extracted features against our database of over 1 million cards using perceptual hashing and vector similarity.
- Verification — The top match is verified against multiple data points to ensure accuracy.
The entire process takes about 1-2 seconds on a modern phone.
What We Support
At launch, we support cards from:
- Pokemon TCG — Base Set through the latest Scarlet & Violet expansions
- Magic: The Gathering — Alpha through current sets
- Yu-Gi-Oh! — All major sets and rarities
More games will be added based on demand. Disney Lorcana and One Piece TCG support is already in development.
Accuracy and Edge Cases
Our scanner achieves high accuracy on standard cards in good lighting conditions. We’re continuously improving performance on:
- Vintage cards with wear and fading
- Variant printings (alternate art, full art, secret rares)
- Foreign language cards across major markets
Free vs. Pro
Free users get 30 AI scans per month — plenty for casual collectors adding a few cards at a time. Pro members get unlimited scans, which is essential for anyone processing bulk purchases or large collection imports.
We’re building the scanner to be fast, accurate, and affordable. Try it out when we launch.
