Special alternate frame treatments unique to each MTG set

Showcase cards in Magic: The Gathering are special alternate versions of cards that feature a unique frame design and art style tied to the theme of their specific set. Introduced as part of the “Project Booster Fun” initiative starting with Throne of Eldraine in 2019, showcase treatments are designed to give each set its own distinct visual identity beyond the standard card frame. Every major set now includes its own showcase style, ranging from storybook illustrations to anime-inspired art to stained glass designs.

Each set’s showcase treatment is thematically connected to the world and story of that expansion. For example, Throne of Eldraine featured fairytale storybook frames with stylized border artwork, Theros Beyond Death used constellation-themed frames with starfield patterns, and Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty offered a futuristic ninja-style frame with Japanese ukiyo-e inspired artwork. This set-specific approach means that showcase cards are inherently tied to their product, creating a sense of collectible uniqueness that standard frame cards across different sets do not share. Typically, only a subset of cards in each set receives the showcase treatment, often creatures or spells that are most connected to the set’s core mechanical or narrative themes.

Showcase cards are highly sought after by collectors because they combine mechanical playability with distinctive visual appeal. Their prices vary widely based on the popularity of the showcase style, the desirability of the card itself, and the availability of the printing. Some showcase treatments, like the Ichor-dripped frames from Phyrexia: All Will Be One or the anime-style cards from various sets, have become especially popular and command substantial premiums. CardDeckr identifies showcase variants during card scanning and tracks their market prices separately from standard printings, giving you a precise picture of your collection’s value across all frame treatments.
