BGS (Beckett Grading Services)
gradingA premium card grading service known for its detailed sub-grade system, grading on a scale from 0.5 to 10.
BGS, or Beckett Grading Services, is a highly respected third-party card grading company operated by Beckett Collectibles. Founded in 1999, BGS differentiates itself from competitors by providing detailed sub-grades alongside the overall grade. Every BGS-graded card receives individual scores for four attributes — centering, corners, edges, and surface — each displayed on the label. The overall grade ranges from 0.5 to 10, and the combination of sub-grades gives collectors and buyers a granular understanding of exactly where the card excels and where it falls short. This level of transparency has made BGS a favorite among serious collectors who demand precision.
BGS uses a half-point grading scale (8.0, 8.5, 9.0, 9.5, 10.0), which provides more nuance than PSA’s whole-number system. A BGS 9.5 (Gem Mint) is widely considered comparable to a PSA 10, while a BGS 10 (Pristine) is an exceptionally rare grade reserved for virtually flawless cards. The pinnacle of BGS grading is the Black Label — a BGS 10 where all four sub-grades also receive a perfect 10. Black Label cards are extraordinarily rare and command astronomical premiums. BGS slabs are also distinct in appearance, featuring a thicker case and a color-coded label system that quickly communicates the grade level.
For TCG collectors, BGS is particularly popular in the modern card market and among those who value the transparency of sub-grades. When buying a BGS-graded card, you know precisely what you’re getting — a card with a 9.5 overall but a 10 in surface and corners tells a different story than one with uniform 9.5s across the board. BGS also tends to be perceived as having stricter grading standards at the top end, which is why BGS 10 Pristine and Black Label designations carry such immense prestige and value in the hobby.
