grading

The most popular and widely recognized card grading service, using a 1-10 numerical scale to assess card condition.

PSA, or Professional Sports Authenticator, is the largest and most well-known third-party card grading company in the trading card industry. Founded in 1991, PSA evaluates the condition of trading cards on a numerical scale from 1 (Poor) to 10 (Gem Mint) and encapsulates them in tamper-evident plastic holders, commonly called “slabs.” A PSA grade provides an objective, standardized assessment of a card’s condition, which directly impacts its market value. PSA-graded cards are universally recognized and accepted across all major marketplaces, auction houses, and collector communities.

The PSA grading process evaluates four primary attributes: centering, corners, edges, and surface. Unlike BGS, PSA does not provide individual sub-grades for these categories — instead, graders assign a single holistic grade based on their overall assessment. This simplicity is part of PSA’s appeal, as it makes graded cards easy to understand and compare at a glance. PSA also maintains the most comprehensive population report in the hobby, which tracks exactly how many copies of each card have been graded at each level. This data is invaluable for understanding the rarity of high-grade copies.

For TCG collectors, PSA grades carry significant weight in the marketplace. A PSA 10 (Gem Mint) designation can multiply a card’s raw value by anywhere from two to one hundred times or more, depending on the card’s desirability and the population of graded copies. PSA’s dominance in the market means their graded cards tend to command the highest premiums and are the most liquid — they sell faster and more predictably than cards graded by other services. Whether you’re building a personal collection or investing in cards as assets, understanding PSA’s grading standards is fundamental to navigating the TCG market.
