A permanent card type in MTG representing ongoing magical effects

Enchantments are a core permanent card type in Magic: The Gathering that represent persistent magical effects, mystical bindings, and supernatural phenomena. Unlike instants and sorceries, which resolve and go to the graveyard, enchantments stay on the battlefield and continue to influence the game for as long as they remain in play. They have been part of Magic since its inception in 1993, and the card type encompasses everything from global effects that change the rules of the game to targeted auras that enhance or hinder individual creatures.

The enchantment card type includes several important subtypes. Auras are enchantments that attach to specific permanents or players, granting bonuses or imposing penalties. Sagas, introduced in the Dominaria expansion, tell a story over multiple turns by triggering chapter abilities in sequence before being sacrificed. The Theros block introduced enchantment creatures, blending the two card types to represent the gods and mythical beings of that plane. More recently, Classes and Rooms have added new enchantment subtypes with level-up or multi-room mechanics that provide progression and strategic choices.

From a collecting standpoint, enchantments include many of the most powerful and valuable cards in Magic’s history. Cards like Sylvan Library, Rhystic Study, and Smothering Tithe are Commander staples that carry premium price tags, particularly in foil or special art treatments. Legendary enchantments, especially the God cards from Theros, combine narrative appeal with competitive playability, making them popular targets for collectors. CardDeckr tracks enchantment cards across all their printings and variants, so you can monitor the market value of these enduring magical effects in your collection.
