Legendary
card-typesA card supertype in MTG indicating unique named characters or items
Legendary is a supertype in Magic: The Gathering that designates cards representing unique, named characters, places, or objects within the game’s lore. The Legendary rule dictates that a player can only control one permanent with any given Legendary name at a time; if a second copy enters the battlefield under the same player’s control, one must be sent to the graveyard. This mechanic has been a part of Magic since the Legends expansion in 1994 and applies across all permanent types, including creatures, artifacts, enchantments, planeswalkers, and lands.
Legendary creatures hold a special place in Magic thanks to the Commander format, which has become one of the most popular ways to play the game. In Commander, each deck is built around a Legendary creature that serves as the player’s commander, creating enormous demand for interesting and powerful Legendary cards. This format-driven demand has made Legendary creatures a major category in the secondary market, with popular commanders like Atraxa, Edgar Markov, and Korvold commanding significant prices. Wizards of the Coast has leaned heavily into Legendary design in recent years, producing entire sets focused on Legendary characters.
From a collecting perspective, Legendary cards carry both mechanical and narrative significance. They often feature the most detailed artwork and the richest flavor text, making them appealing to both competitive players and lore enthusiasts. Many of the most expensive cards in Magic’s history are Legendary, from the original Legends rares to modern chase mythics. CardDeckr helps you track the full spectrum of Legendary cards in your collection, with price data that reflects the unique demand patterns driven by Commander and other constructed formats.
