A card type in MTG representing powerful allied characters

Planeswalkers are a distinctive card type in Magic: The Gathering that represent powerful characters capable of traveling between the planes of the multiverse. Introduced in the Lorwyn expansion in 2007, planeswalker cards function differently from other permanents: they enter the battlefield with a set number of loyalty counters and can activate loyalty abilities on your turn, either adding or removing counters. Opponents can choose to attack planeswalkers directly to reduce their loyalty, and a planeswalker with zero loyalty is sent to the graveyard.

The planeswalker card type revolutionized both gameplay and collecting in Magic. Characters like Jace, Liliana, Chandra, and Nissa became the faces of the franchise, driving storylines and marketing campaigns. Most planeswalkers are printed at Mythic Rare, though some have appeared at lower rarities in special sets. Their unique card frame, prominent character artwork, and mechanical complexity make them some of the most visually striking and desirable cards to collect. Since 2018, all planeswalkers are also Legendary, meaning only one copy of each named planeswalker can be on the battlefield under your control at a time.

In the secondary market, planeswalker cards consistently rank among the most valuable and actively traded cards. Iconic printings like original Jace, the Mind Sculptor or Liliana of the Veil have maintained high price tags for years. Alternate art, borderless, and foil versions of popular planeswalkers can reach particularly premium prices. CardDeckr’s portfolio tracking automatically identifies planeswalker cards and tracks their market performance, making it easy to monitor the value of these cornerstone collectibles.
