Rainbow Rare

Rainbow rare cards are a distinctive type of secret rare in the Pokemon TCG, instantly recognizable by their multicolored, prismatic rainbow texture that replaces the card’s standard color palette. Instead of displaying the Pokemon or character in its original colors, rainbow rares render the entire card in a shimmering gradient of rainbow hues, creating a unified chromatic effect across the illustration, borders, and text areas. This striking visual treatment was introduced during the Sun & Moon era and became a defining feature of that generation and the Sword & Shield era that followed.

The rainbow treatment transforms familiar cards into something entirely different from their standard counterparts. GX, VMAX, and VSTAR Pokemon that normally appear in their natural colors are reimagined in flowing rainbow gradients, giving them an ethereal, almost otherworldly quality. The textured foil on rainbow rares adds depth to the color shifts, and tilting the card under light produces a dynamic play of colors that makes these cards visually captivating. Each set that included rainbow rares typically featured them as the highest-numbered secret rares, making them the very last cards on the set checklist.

Rainbow rares have had an interesting trajectory in the collector market. During the Sun & Moon era, they were among the most coveted cards in each set, commanding premium prices upon release. As more sets introduced rainbow rares and they became an expected inclusion, some collector enthusiasm shifted toward alt arts and other unique card types, leading to market price adjustments. Nevertheless, rainbow rares from key sets and featuring popular Pokemon continue to hold strong value. With the Scarlet & Violet era moving away from traditional rainbow rares in favor of new rarity types, existing rainbow rares from earlier eras have begun to take on a more nostalgic and collectible status, particularly high-grade examples of fan-favorite Pokemon.
