Secret Rare

card-types

A card numbered beyond the set's official card count, indicating it is among the rarest and most exclusive pulls in the expansion.

Secret rare cards are Pokemon cards whose collector number exceeds the set’s official card count, making them hidden extras beyond the standard checklist. For example, a card numbered 215/198 is a secret rare because its number (215) surpasses the set’s total (198). This numbering convention immediately signals to collectors that the card is among the rarest and most exclusive pulls available in that expansion. Secret rares have been a feature of the Pokemon TCG since the e-Card era and have grown in both variety and desirability over the years.

The secret rare category encompasses several distinct visual treatments, including gold cards with metallic gold borders, rainbow rares with multicolored prismatic textures, and alternate art versions of key Pokemon and Trainer cards. In modern sets from the Scarlet & Violet era, secret rares also include Special Art Rares and hyper rares that push the boundaries of card design. The pull rates for secret rares are intentionally low, often requiring collectors to open multiple booster boxes before finding a specific secret rare, which directly contributes to their high secondary market values.

For collectors and investors, secret rares are the marquee cards of any set and typically represent the highest-value pulls. The market prices for these cards can range from modest premiums for less popular secret rares to several hundred dollars for highly sought-after examples featuring fan-favorite Pokemon. When tracking your collection’s value, secret rares are often the cards that move the needle most significantly. Understanding which cards in a set are secret rares and monitoring their market trends is essential for any serious TCG collector looking to make informed buying, selling, or trading decisions.
