Commander (EDH)
gameplayA popular multiplayer MTG format with 100-card singleton decks.
Commander, originally known as Elder Dragon Highlander (EDH), is a multiplayer format in Magic: The Gathering that has grown to become the most popular way to play the game. Each player builds a 100-card singleton deck, meaning no card other than basic lands can appear more than once. Every deck is led by a legendary creature designated as the “commander,” which begins the game in a special command zone and can be cast repeatedly throughout the game. The commander’s color identity restricts which cards can be included in the deck, giving each deck a unique identity and thematic focus.
Commander games typically feature three to four players in a free-for-all format, creating a social and political dynamic that is absent from traditional one-on-one play. The format emphasizes self-expression, creativity, and memorable moments over cutthroat competition, though a competitive variant known as cEDH (competitive Elder Dragon Highlander) exists for players who want to push the format to its limits. Commander has its own separate banlist and rules committee, and Wizards of the Coast now designs products specifically for the format, including preconstructed Commander decks released alongside every major set.
Commander has had an enormous impact on the TCG market. Because every deck requires 100 unique cards and the format’s massive player base is constantly building new decks, demand for Commander-playable cards is immense and sustained. Legendary creatures that make popular commanders, powerful utility cards, and unique effects that shine in multiplayer can command premium prices driven entirely by Commander demand. Many cards that would otherwise be bulk rares have become valuable solely because of their popularity in this format, making Commander metagame awareness essential for collectors and traders.
