Format
gameplayA set of rules defining which cards are legal for play.
A format is a defined set of rules and restrictions that governs which cards are legal for use in a particular style of play. Formats exist to create diverse and balanced competitive environments, ensuring that players at a tournament are all operating under the same constraints. Different formats can vary dramatically in their card pools, deck construction rules, and strategic depth, offering players a wide range of experiences within a single trading card game.
Most major TCGs maintain multiple official formats simultaneously. Some formats are “rotating,” meaning older sets cycle out of legality as new ones are released, keeping the environment fresh and accessible to newer players. Others are “eternal” or “non-rotating,” allowing cards from a much larger pool and rewarding deep format knowledge and long-term card investment. Each format develops its own distinct meta, staple cards, and competitive culture. In Magic: The Gathering, for example, Standard, Modern, and Commander each feel like entirely different games despite using the same card pool at their core.
Understanding formats is essential for both players and collectors. A card’s value is heavily influenced by which formats it is legal and playable in. A card that is a multi-format staple will command a much higher price than one that only sees play in a single format. When format rotations occur or banlists are updated, card prices can shift dramatically. Tracking format legality and competitive viability across formats is a key part of managing a TCG portfolio effectively.
