A non-rotating MTG format including cards from 8th Edition onward.

Modern is a non-rotating constructed format in Magic: The Gathering that includes all cards printed in standard-legal sets from Eighth Edition (released in 2003) forward. Because it does not rotate, Modern features a vast and deep card pool that enables a wide variety of powerful strategies. The format is known for its high power level, fast gameplay, and diverse metagame, making it one of the most popular competitive formats in Magic.

Unlike Standard, where the card pool refreshes regularly, Modern’s non-rotating nature means that once a card is legal, it remains legal indefinitely unless it is specifically banned. This creates a format where the best strategies have been refined over many years and the power level is significantly higher than Standard. Modern has its own banlist, maintained by Wizards of the Coast, which is periodically updated to keep the format healthy and prevent any single deck from becoming oppressively dominant. Major Modern events draw large fields and are a cornerstone of the competitive Magic circuit.

From a collector’s perspective, Modern staples represent some of the most valuable and stable investments in Magic. Because the format does not rotate, cards that are competitively viable tend to hold their value over long periods. Key lands, removal spells, and archetype-defining cards from Modern’s history can command prices well above their Standard-era peaks, especially if they come from older or out-of-print sets with limited supply. Tracking Modern metagame shifts and banlist announcements is critical for anyone managing a Magic-focused portfolio, as these events can cause rapid and significant price movements.
