Population Report
gradingA publicly accessible database maintained by grading companies that tracks how many copies of each card have been graded at each grade level.
A population report, commonly called a “pop report,” is a comprehensive database maintained by professional card grading companies that records exactly how many copies of each card have been graded and what grades they received. PSA, BGS, CGC, and SGC all maintain their own population reports, which are publicly accessible through their websites. For any given card, you can look up the total number of submissions, how many received each grade from 1 through 10, and calculate the percentage of cards that achieved top grades. This data is updated regularly as new cards are graded and added to the system, providing a living snapshot of card rarity at each condition level.
Population reports are one of the most powerful tools available for understanding a card’s true rarity and fair market value. A card’s raw scarcity (how many were printed) tells only part of the story — what truly drives graded card values is the population at each grade level. A card with a total PSA population of 10,000 but only 50 PSA 10s is a fundamentally different proposition than one with 10,000 graded and 5,000 PSA 10s, even if both cards are equally rare in raw form. Low-population high-grade cards command extreme premiums because collectors competing for the finest known examples are bidding against severe supply constraints. Conversely, cards with high populations at the top grade may not justify the cost of grading, as the supply of graded copies keeps premiums modest.
For TCG collectors, regularly consulting population reports should be a core part of your buying, selling, and grading strategy. Before submitting a card for grading, check the pop report to understand the potential value at each grade level — if a card already has thousands of PSA 10s, the premium over a PSA 9 may be minimal, making the grading gamble less worthwhile. When buying graded cards, compare the price against the population to ensure you’re not overpaying for a grade that’s relatively common. And when tracking your portfolio’s value, keep an eye on population trends: as more copies of a card are graded at top levels, the per-card value of those grades can decrease due to increased supply. CardDeckr’s Stock Check feature aggregates this kind of market intelligence to help you make data-driven decisions about your collection.
